List of African American newspapers in New Jersey facts for kids
This article is about African American newspapers that have been published in New Jersey. These newspapers were, and still are, very important for sharing news and stories within Black communities. They include both newspapers that are still being published today and those from the past.
One of the first Black newspapers in New Jersey was The Sentinel, which started in Trenton in 1880. The number of Black newspapers in New Jersey grew a lot in the early 1900s. In 1900, there were about 12 newspapers. By 1940, there were around 35!
Sometimes, communities in New Jersey also read newspapers from nearby big cities like New York or Philadelphia. An example is the Philadelphia Independent.

Why African American Newspapers Are Important
African American newspapers played a huge role in their communities. They shared news that was often ignored by mainstream newspapers. They also gave a voice to Black people, allowing them to share their experiences, opinions, and achievements. These papers helped fight for civil rights and equality. They also helped connect communities and celebrate Black culture.
