African American newspapers in New York have a very important history! New York was actually the first place in the United States where an African American newspaper was published. This was Freedom's Journal in 1827. Since then, New York has always been a busy place for these newspapers. They helped share news, ideas, and stories important to the African American community, both in the past and today.
