Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Rights of All was an important newspaper for African Americans. It was published from May 1829 to 1830. This newspaper was started in New York City by Samuel Cornish. He was a black Presbyterian minister and worked hard against slavery.

The Rights of All took the place of Freedom's Journal. Freedom's Journal was the first newspaper in the United States made by and for African Americans. Samuel Cornish had started Freedom's Journal with John Russwurm.

Why The Rights of All Was Started

Samuel Cornish left Freedom's Journal after six months. John Russwurm then became the only editor. Under Russwurm, Freedom's Journal changed its mind about the American Colonization Society. This group wanted to send free black people to Africa. Freedom's Journal started supporting this idea.

When Samuel Cornish started The Rights of All, he made sure it was against the American Colonization Society. This was a key message of Freedom's Journal when it first began.

How The Rights of All Was Like Freedom's Journal

Even though The Rights of All had a new name, it was very similar to Freedom's Journal. It used the same people to help get new readers. One of these people was David Walker. He was a strong abolitionist, meaning he was against slavery. Walker helped promote The Rights of All in his famous book, Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World.

Samuel Cornish thought that The Rights of All had about 800 people who subscribed to it. This was a good number of supporters. However, the newspaper lasted for less than a year.
