What Do Ambassadors Do?
Ambassadors are the highest-ranking diplomats a country sends. They live in the capital city of the host country, like London for the UK. Their main job is to keep strong ties between their home country and the country they are in. They also help their country's citizens who are visiting or living there.
Sometimes, before a full ambassador is sent, other representatives might be in charge. A Charge d'affaires (pronounced "shar-zhay da-fair") is a temporary head of a diplomatic mission. An Envoy extraordinary is a diplomat sent for a special purpose, often with less authority than a full ambassador. An Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary is a full ambassador with complete power to represent their country.
Early Ambassadors: From Austria-Hungary
Before Hungary became fully independent, it was part of the large Austria-Hungary empire. During this time, the ambassadors to the United Kingdom represented the entire empire, not just Hungary.
