The Chief Minister of Odisha is like the main leader of the state government in Odisha, India. Think of them as the head of the team that runs the state. While the Governor is the official head, the Chief Minister is the one who actually leads and makes decisions.
After elections for the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the Governor usually asks the party with the most seats to form the government. The Governor then appoints the Chief Minister. Odisha was formed on April 1, 1936. Back then, the leader was called the Prime Minister. Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo was the first Prime Minister. He led the government until July 1937. After him, Bishwanath Das from the All India Congress party took over for two years.
Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati became Prime Minister again later. He then handed over power to Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab in 1946. When India became independent, the title changed from Prime Minister to Chief Minister. Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab continued as Chief Minister. Then, Nabakrushna Choudhury took over.
Since 1946, Odisha has had 14 Chief Ministers. Naveen Patnaik of the Biju Janata Dal was the longest-serving Chief Minister. He served from 2000 until 2024. The current Chief Minister of Odisha is Mohan Charan Majhi. He took office on June 12, 2024, and is from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

What Does a Chief Minister Do?
The Chief Minister is the most important person in the state government. They lead the Council of Ministers, which is a group of elected officials. These ministers are in charge of different departments. For example, there might be a minister for education or health.
