The Governor of Kerala is a very important leader in the southern Indian state of Kerala. They are the official head of the state. The Governor is chosen by the President of India. They stay in office for as long as the President wishes.
The Governor is the "head by law" of the government of Kerala. This means all official actions of the government are done in their name. However, the real power to make decisions belongs to the elected group of ministers. This group is led by the Chief Minister of Kerala. The Governor also has special powers. For example, they can choose or remove ministers. They can also suggest that the President take control of the state in certain situations. This is called President's rule. They can also hold back new laws for the President to approve.
Since January 2, 2025, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has been the 23rd Governor of Kerala.
