A drought hits the jungle, and animals are dying of thirst. Hathi the elephant declares a "water truce" around the river. This allows all animals to drink safely. Only Shere Khan refuses to follow the truce. Mowgli challenges him to a fight.

Hathi the elephant tells Mowgli and his friends a story. Long ago, his ancestor, Tha, was king of the jungle. An ancestor of Shere Khan was the first to kill another animal, and then the first to kill a man. Hathi explains that this act made humans hunt all jungle animals. So, both men and tigers ended the peace in the jungle.

While hunting, Mowgli helps a stag escape a snare. He doesn't kill it. His friends scold him, saying he broke jungle law. A few days later, the stag forces Mowgli into a fight. Mowgli kills it. Even though he had to follow the "law of the strongest," Mowgli doesn't feel proud.

Chil the eagle warns the Seeonee forest animals. A huge danger is coming: an invasion by dholes, red dogs. They are pushed north by thirst and hunger. After a long meeting, Luri is made commander. Mowgli's mother sends him to get Kaa. She wants Kaa's advice for a defense plan. Kaa comes up with a very clever idea.

The red dogs reach Seeonee forest, where Mowgli waits. At sunset, he starts Kaa's plan. He lures the dogs into Death Valley. There, a swarm of black bees attacks them. The surviving dogs jump into the river. The current carries them to the wolves, who show off their fighting skills. The dangerous enemy is defeated. Peace returns to Seeonee forest.

A mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi tells Mowgli what happened. After Buldeo got angry, villagers kidnapped Jumeirah and her parents. They thought the family were demons. Mowgli rushes to the village to help. On the way, he meets Buldeo and Riswan. They threaten to kill him.

Mowgli breaks into the hut where Rahhar and his family are prisoners. He sets them free. They ask him for food to regain strength before escaping. While hunting Mowgli with a friend, Buldeo runs into Bagheera.

With help from other animals, Mowgli helps Jumeirah and her family escape. At the same time, he scares the villagers badly. They don't even try to follow the family. To prevent more trouble, the animals destroy the village. They drive the humans out of the jungle.

Everyone celebrates the birth of Sura and Lala's two cubs. But Mowgli misses Jumeirah. He decides to travel to Khanhiwara, where Jumeirah and her family went. When he arrives, Mowgli meets Riswan. Riswan seems much nicer now.

Riswan sells Mowgli to John J. Hargreaves. This man provides animals for circuses. During the night, Mowgli manages to escape from his cage.

Mowgli misses Jumeirah and thinks about her constantly. But he gets distracted by a herd of deer. They are perfect prey for hungry wolves.

Akela is badly hurt fighting hyenas. Instead of healing, he refuses to eat or get treatment. He feels his time has come. Soon after, he passes away, just as he predicted. Before he dies, he tells Mowgli to live with humans. He says Mowgli's heart won't let him stay with the wolf pack.

After shedding his old skin, Kaa tells Mowgli about elephants. Elephants from different jungles gather to dance. People who see this dance are said to live long lives. Hathi lets Mowgli watch the elephant dance. Afterward, Hathi gives Mowgli Jumeirah's scarf. Mowgli wants to find her right away, but he doesn't know where she is. Meanwhile, Jumeirah, Meshua, and Rahhar wait for Mowgli in the jungle. Sanjay died from pneumonia in Khanhiwara. As time passes, they start to lose hope of seeing Mowgli again.

Mowgli saves Jumeirah from some wild monkeys. He is reunited with Jumeirah and her family. Together, they decide to plant crops and raise animals again. Some villagers return, surprising them. They beg for forgiveness for following Buldeo. They explain that other villages turned them away, thinking they were cursed. After Jumeirah convinces them, Rahhar and Meshua forgive the villagers. The villagers join them in rebuilding the village.

Mowgli decides to leave the jungle. Before moving to the village with Jumeirah and her family, he says goodbye to his animal friends. Bagheera will go with him. All the jungle animals gather at Council Rock for a bittersweet farewell. At the end, Mowgli is with his human friends. He throws his Fang and gets visits from his animal family. He will visit them often.
