What the Speaker Does
The Speaker and their helpers are chosen by the members of the Knesset. Before a Speaker is picked, the oldest member of the Knesset acts as the temporary Speaker. This is unless that person is the Prime Minister or a minister.
Leading the Knesset
The Speaker has many key jobs. They are in charge of how the Knesset works every day. They also represent the Knesset to other countries and people. It's their job to make sure everyone in the Knesset acts respectfully. They also ensure that all the rules are followed during meetings.
Helping the Speaker
The Speaker gets help from several Deputy Speakers. Together, the Speaker and the Deputy Speakers form a group called the Presidium. This group decides what topics the Knesset will discuss. They also set the schedule for all the meetings.
Being Fair and Unbiased
The Speaker is expected to be fair to everyone. They should not show favoritism to any one political party. Even though they are expected to be neutral, they can sometimes join in debates. They are also allowed to vote on new laws.
