He is known for being a pioneering figure in Israeli politics.

Early Life and Education

Amir Ohana was born in Beersheba, Israel, on March 15, 1976. He was the third son of Meir and Esther Ohana, who had moved to Israel from Morocco. As a child, his family moved to Lehavim and then to Rishon LeZion.

Ohana served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for six years. He worked as a road accident investigator in the Military Police. He also helped secure traffic routes in the Gaza Strip. Later, he became an officer and commanded a military police base. After his regular service, he worked for Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, for another six years. Amir Ohana became involved in politics with the Likud party. He was the chairman of the Likud's group for diverse communities, called Likud Pride. In 2015, he was placed on the Likud list for the Knesset elections. Although Likud won 30 seats and he was 32nd on the list, he later entered the Knesset. This happened on December 27, 2015, when another member resigned.

During his first time in the Knesset, he was part of the Finance Committee and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He also led a group that worked on gun-carrying policies in Israel. He also helped lead the Israel–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group.

After being re-elected in the April 2019 elections, Ohana was appointed Minister of Justice in June. This made him the first person with his background to serve in the Israeli government. He was re-elected in September 2019 and March 2020. In May 2020, he became the Minister of Public Security. In this role, he made decisions about public safety.

In July 2020, he temporarily left the Knesset under a rule called the Norwegian Law. This rule allows ministers to step down from the Knesset while serving in the government. He returned to the Knesset after the 2021 elections.

On December 29, 2022, Ohana was elected Speaker of the Knesset. This was another historic moment, as he became the first person with his background to hold this important position in the Israeli parliament.

Views and Opinions

Amir Ohana supports making it easier for people to carry firearms in Israel. He believes this could help prevent terror attacks and allow for faster reactions. He started a special group in the Knesset to work on this issue.

In 2016, when other members of the Knesset proposed laws to improve the status of certain communities, Ohana chose not to vote. He stated that he could not vote against these bills, but he also wanted to follow his party's general stance.

He is also a board member of a group called Tadmor – Eretz Yisrael loyalists, which is part of the Likud party.

Personal Life

Amir Ohana and his partner, Alon Hadad, have a son and a daughter. They live in Tel Aviv.
