The Addled Parliament: A Quick Look

This article is about the 1614 Parliament in England, which was the second one during the reign of King James I. It's famously known as the "Addled Parliament" because it didn't achieve much!

The parliament started on April 5, 1614, and ended very quickly on June 7, 1614. It only lasted about eight weeks. It earned its nickname because it failed to solve a big problem between the King and the House of Commons. King James I wanted to raise money by asking for a special payment called a 'Benevolence' (which was about £65,000). However, the House of Commons didn't want to agree to more taxation. Because they couldn't agree, the King simply closed down the parliament.

Back in those days, before 1621, there wasn't an official list of all the members of Parliament (MPs). So, the list for the 1614 parliament isn't perfect. Many MPs are still unknown, and some names are just guesses based on old records. Later, in 1985, a more accurate list was created by Maija Jansson as part of her research.

Who Was in the Parliament?

The "Addled Parliament" had representatives from all over England and Wales. These representatives, called Members of Parliament (MPs), were chosen from different areas known as "constituencies." Each constituency sent one or two people to speak for them in parliament.

For example, from the area of Bedfordshire, two MPs were chosen: Sir Henry Grey and Sir Oliver Luke. From the town of Bedford, Sir Alexander St John and John Leigh were the MPs.

The full list of all the MPs from every constituency is very long! It includes many names like those from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, and many other places across the country. Each MP represented their local area and brought its concerns to the parliament.
