List of Mississippi Union Civil War units facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

During the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, the United States was divided. The "Union" was the northern states that wanted to keep the country together and end slavery. The "Confederacy" was the southern states that had left the Union. Even though Mississippi was a Confederate state, some people there supported the Union. This article lists the military groups from Mississippi that fought for the Union side.

Most of the Union units formed in Mississippi were made up of African-American volunteers. These brave soldiers eventually became part of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), which were special units for African-American soldiers in the Union Army. There was only one unit of white Union soldiers raised in Mississippi. You can find a separate list of Mississippi's Confederate units.
