Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pokémon, known in Japan as Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā), is a super popular Japanese anime TV show. It's made by an animation studio called OLM for TV Tokyo. The show is based on the fun Pokémon video games made by Nintendo.

For a long time, the series followed a young Pokémon trainer named Ash Ketchum. He wanted to become a Pokémon Master! His best friend and partner was an electric mouse Pokémon named Pikachu (whose voice is done by Ikue Ōtani). Ash traveled with different friends on his adventures. However, in the 26th season, the show started a brand new story with new main characters, Liko and Roy.

What is Pokémon All About?

The world of Pokémon is full of amazing creatures called Pokémon! People who train them are called Pokémon Trainers. Their goal is often to catch many different Pokémon, train them, and battle other trainers. Ash Ketchum's big dream was to become a Pokémon Master, which means being one of the very best Pokémon trainers in the world. He traveled to many different regions, met new friends, and faced many challenges.

Ash and Pikachu's Long Adventure

Ash and Pikachu were the main stars of Pokémon for over 25 years! They explored many different parts of the Pokémon world, from the Kanto region where their journey began, to Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and even the Galar region. In each new place, Ash would meet new friends, catch new Pokémon, and challenge powerful Gym Leaders to earn badges. These badges helped him enter big tournaments called Pokémon Leagues. Pikachu was always by his side, helping him win battles and learn important lessons about friendship and teamwork.

How the Show is Organized

The Pokémon TV show is divided into different "seasons" or "series." These divisions are usually based on how the show is produced and aired in Japan. For example, when Ash travels to a new region, it often marks the start of a new series or group of seasons. In English-speaking countries, the episodes are sometimes aired a bit differently, but they still follow the original Japanese order. Sometimes, a few episodes might not be shown if they are considered inappropriate for some reason.

Different Eras of Pokémon

Over the years, the Pokémon anime has gone through several big parts, each with its own name.

  • The Black & White series (Seasons 14-16) took Ash and Pikachu to the Unova region.
  • The XY series (Seasons 17-19) saw them exploring the Kalos region.
  • The Sun & Moon series (Seasons 20-22) brought them to the sunny Alola region.
  • The Journeys series (Seasons 23-25) was a bit different, with Ash and his new friend Goh traveling all over the world, revisiting old regions and exploring new ones. This series showed Ash finally achieving his dream of becoming a World Champion!

A New Beginning: Liko and Roy

After Ash Ketchum achieved his goal, the Pokémon anime started a brand new adventure in Season 26, called Horizons. This new series introduces two new main characters: Liko and Roy. They are on their own exciting journey, exploring the Pokémon world and discovering new mysteries. This means a fresh start for the Pokémon anime, with new stories and new Pokémon to meet!
