The City of Armadale in Western Australia is home to many cool historic places! These special spots are protected because they tell important stories about the past. The Heritage Council of Western Australia keeps a list called the State Register of Heritage Places. As of 2024, 13 places in Armadale are so important that they are on this special State Register.

Armadale Brickworks Quarry (former)

This old quarry, started in 1901, was super important because it provided the special clay (shale) for the very first brickworks in Western Australia. Imagine all the buildings that were made with bricks from here! It became a heritage place in 2007.

St Matthew's Anglican Church Group

This group of buildings includes a church, an old house (called the Old Rectory), and a newer house (the New Rectory). The church was built in 1904 with a cool old style, and the Old Rectory is a beautiful house from the same time. It was added to the register in 2007.

Jarrah Tree, Armadale

This isn't just any tree! This giant Jarrah Tree is believed to be over 500 years old, dating back to around 1500. It's an incredibly large and ancient tree, making it a living piece of history. It was listed as a heritage place in 2003.

Armadale District Hall

Built in 1936, the Armadale District Hall is a great example of the "Inter-War Art Deco" style, which was popular between the two World Wars. It's a grand building that has hosted many community events over the years. It joined the register in 2003.

Armadale State Brickworks Dust Room & Machinery Shed (former)

This building, from 1949, was part of the Armadale State Brickworks. What makes it special are the old brick-making machines inside, which date back to the 1920s. These machines are very rare in Australia! It was added to the register in 2007.

Ye Olde Narrogin Inne

This historic hotel has been a gathering place since 1856! The current building, built in the "Inter-War Old English style," dates from a later period but stands on a site that has continuously been a hotel for a very long time. It became a heritage place in 2004.

Cole's Shaft (former)

This site is home to the very first mining shaft ever dug in Western Australia, back in 1846! It's also known by other names like Forbes' Shaft or Kelmscott Mine. This place shows us the early days of mining in the region. It was listed in 2003.

Canning Contour Channel (former)

This amazing series of concrete channels, built in 1935, is 16 kilometers long! It was designed to carry large amounts of drinking water using gravity, and it's unique because it was open to the air. It's also listed under the City of Gosnells and became a heritage place in 2005.

Wirra Willa Gardens

These beautiful gardens, created in 1935, are designed in a "Paradise style" on a very steep hill. They are also known as Katta Mia or Catamara. It's a peaceful and stunning place to visit. Wirra Willa Gardens joined the register in 2009.

Young Australia League Grove of the Unforgotten

Located within the Araluen Botanic Park, this grove features 89 Pencil Pine trees planted in 1933. It's a special part of the larger Araluen Botanic Park heritage site.

William Buckingham's Homestead

This old mud brick house, built around 1880, is a great example of early Western Australian homes. It's also known as Coolgiebrie or Buckingham's Cottage. It shows us how people lived and built houses long ago. It was listed in 2004.

Darjeeling

Built in 1925, this house is a rare example of the "Interwar Old English style" of residential architecture. It gives us a glimpse into the popular home designs of that time. It became a heritage place in 2015.

Araluen Botanic Park

This beautiful botanic park, started in 1931, was built by members of the Young Australia League. It's a significant place for its natural beauty and its history as a community project. It was added to the State Register in 1997.
