Early Baseball Stadiums in Buffalo

Riverside Park

Riverside Park was one of the first homes for professional baseball in Buffalo. The Buffalo Bisons played here from 1878 to 1883. This team was part of the International Association and later the National League.

The park was located where Fargo Avenue, Rhode Island Street, West Avenue, and Vermont Street meet. Today, this area is mostly residential homes.

Olympic Park (I)

After Riverside Park, the Buffalo Bisons moved to Olympic Park (I). They played here from 1884 to 1888. This stadium hosted the Bisons when they were in the National League and then the International League.

Olympic Park (I) was found near Richmond Avenue, Summer Street, and Norwood Avenue. If you visit that spot today, you'll find the Richmond-Summer Recreation Center and other buildings.

Olympic Park (II) and Offermann Stadium

Olympic Park (II) was also known as Buffalo Baseball Park. The Buffalo Bisons played many seasons here, from 1889 to 1924. Another team, the Buffalo Bisons of the Players' League, also called this field home in 1890.

This stadium was located near East Ferry Street, Masten Avenue, Woodlawn Avenue, and Michigan Avenue. It was a very important spot for baseball in Buffalo for many years.

Later, a new stadium called Offermann Stadium was built on the exact same site. It was also known as Bison Stadium or Buffalo Baseball Park. The Buffalo Bisons continued to play here from 1924 or 1925 until 1960. Today, this historic location is home to the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts and the Buffalo AME Church.

Buffalo Baseball League Grounds

For a short time in 1890, the Buffalo Bisons of the International League played some games at the Buffalo Baseball League grounds. This field also hosted many amateur baseball clubs.

It was located near Urban Street, the Belt Line Railroad, and Fougeron Street.

Federal League Park

Federal League Park was the home of the Buffalo Buffeds/Blues team. They played in the Federal League during 1914 and 1915. This league was a "third major league" at the time.

The park was located near Northland Avenue, Lonsdale Road, Hamlin Road, and Wohlers Avenue. Today, this area is mainly residential.

Modern Baseball Stadiums in Buffalo

War Memorial Stadium

War Memorial Stadium was a significant home for the Buffalo Bisons for many years. The Bisons played here from 1961 to 1970 in the International League. Later, they returned from 1979 to 1987, playing in the Eastern League and American Association.

This stadium was located near Jefferson Avenue, Best Street, Dodge Street, and Masten Avenue. Today, the site is home to the Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion, which is used for many different sports.

Hyde Park Stadium (Sal Maglie Stadium)

Hyde Park Stadium, later known as Sal Maglie Stadium, hosted some Buffalo Bisons games. They played night games here in 1967 and 1968. This stadium also hosted other minor league teams from Niagara Falls.

It is located in Niagara Falls, New York, within Hyde Park. The stadium is near Hyde Park Boulevard, Gill Creek, Robbins Drive, and Linwood Avenue.

Sahlen Field

Sahlen Field is the current home of the Buffalo Bisons. It has had several names over the years, including Pilot Field, North AmeriCare Park, Dunn Tire Park, and Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons have played here since 1988, first in the American Association and then the International League.

During the 2020 and part of the 2021 seasons, the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball's American League played their home games here. This happened because of travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sahlen Field is located at 275 Washington Street in downtown Buffalo. It's a modern stadium where you can still catch a Bisons game today!
