Castles in Dundee
Here are some of the interesting castles you can find in the Dundee area:
Broughty Castle
Broughty Castle is a type of castle called a tower house. It was built in the 15th century, which means it's over 500 years old! Today, it's not used for defense anymore. Instead, it's a museum where you can learn about its history and the local area. The Dundee City Council looks after this castle, and you can find it in Broughty Ferry, a part of Dundee.
Claypotts Castle
Claypotts Castle is a special kind of tower house known as a Z-plan tower house. This means it has a main rectangular block with towers at opposite corners, making it look a bit like the letter 'Z' from above. It was built in the 16th century. This castle is very well-preserved, meaning it's still in great condition. Historic Scotland, an organization that protects important historic places, owns and cares for Claypotts Castle.
Dudhope Castle
Dudhope Castle is an extended tower house that dates back to the 15th century. Over time, parts were added to the original tower. Today, this historic building is used as offices by the Dundee City Council. You can find Dudhope Castle near the Law, a famous hill in Dundee.
Dundee Castle
Dundee Castle was one of the earliest castles in the area, built in the 12th century. Sadly, there are no remains of this castle left today. It was located right in the city of Dundee itself.
Mains Castle
Mains Castle is a courtyard castle that was built in the 16th century. This type of castle usually has buildings arranged around a central open space. Mains Castle is still very well-preserved and is owned privately. It's also known by a couple of other names: Claverhouse Castle and Fintry Castle.
Powrie Castle
Powrie Castle is another example of a Z-plan tower house, built in the 16th century. However, unlike Claypotts, much of Powrie Castle is now in ruins. But there's a part of it, a wing built in the 17th century, that has been restored. This castle is privately owned.
