The governor of North Carolina was a very important person between 1712 and 1776. This person was the official representative of the British King or Queen in the area known as North Carolina.
From 1729 to 1776, the British monarch chose the governor. They usually got advice from a special government office in Britain. The governor acted like the main leader of North Carolina. They were in charge of picking people for the local government after elections. The governor was also the top military leader for the area's defense. They were responsible for keeping North Carolina safe.
Besides the governor, there were other important officials. These included a secretary, an attorney general, and a surveyor general. There was also a receiver general and a chief justice. North Carolina had five ports, and each had a customs collector.
A group called the Council also helped the governor. They gave advice and also acted like one part of the local law-making body. Sometimes, the leader of this Council would step in as acting governor if the main governor was away.
