Thomas Pollock (1654-1722) was an important figure in the early history of North Carolina. He was a Scottish farmer and lawyer who twice served as the acting governor of North Carolina.
Early Life and Move to Carolina
Thomas Pollock was born on May 6, 1654, in Glasgow, Scotland. His father was also named Thomas Pollock.
In 1683, Thomas Pollock moved to the new Carolina. He came as a representative for one of the colony's owners, Lord Proprietor Peter Carteret.
Political Career in North Carolina
Pollock quickly became involved in the government of the colony. He was a member of the Provincial Council. This council helped the governor make decisions and run the colony.
Serving as Acting Governor
Thomas Pollock served as the acting governor of North Carolina two times. An "acting governor" steps in when the regular governor is not available.
His first time as acting governor was from September 12, 1712, to May 28, 1714. He took over after Governor Edward Hyde passed away.
His second time was from March 30, 1722, to August 30, 1722. He became acting governor after Charles Eden died.
