Who is the President of Eritrea?
The President of Eritrea holds a very powerful position. They are responsible for making big decisions for the country. This includes leading the government and guiding the armed forces.
How Long Does a President Serve?
In many countries, a president serves for a set number of years, called a "term limit." For example, they might serve for four or five years and can only be elected a certain number of times.
In Eritrea, the country's constitution says a president's term should be five years. It also says they can be re-elected only once. However, this part of the constitution has not yet been put into full effect. This means that elections have not been held, and the current president has stayed in office without these fixed term limits.
Leaders of Eritrea Since 1991
Before Eritrea officially became independent in 1993, it had a temporary government. The leader of this government was called the Secretary-General.
- Isaias Afwerki was the Secretary-General of the Provisional Government of Eritrea from April 27, 1991, to May 24, 1993. During this time, Eritrea was preparing for its independence.
- Isaias Afwerki then became the first President of the State of Eritrea on May 24, 1993. He has been the president ever since.
