How the President's Job Started
The area now known as South Sudan first gained some independence within Sudan in 1972. This happened because of an agreement called the Addis Ababa Agreement. It helped to end the first civil war in Sudan. During this time, the region had five leaders.
However, in 1983, the main government of Sudan took away this independence. South Sudan became independent again in 2005. This was thanks to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended the second civil war. The job of president for Southern Sudan was brought back. Finally, on July 9, 2011, South Sudan became a fully independent country. A new constitution was then created for the new nation.
How Long a President Serves
Salva Kiir was elected president, and his term was supposed to end in 2015. However, some changes were made to the constitution in 2018. Also, a new government was formed in 2020. These changes allowed his time as president to be extended until 2023.
