The city of Orlando, Florida, became an official city in 1875. The first person to hold the job of mayor was William Jackson Brack, who started in 1875. In Orlando, the mayor is chosen in a special kind of election called a nonpartisan election. This means that when people vote for mayor, the candidates don't have to say if they belong to a political party like Democrats or Republicans. They run based on their own ideas and plans for the city.

Who is the Current Mayor of Orlando?

The person who is mayor right now is Buddy Dyer. He was first chosen in a special election in February 2003. Mayor Dyer was then elected for his first full term in 2004. After a short break in 2005, he has been re-elected many times. He won elections in 2008, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2023.

Important Moments in Mayoral History

  • After Mayor Eugene Goodman Duckworth left office, city commissioner G. H. Sutherland became acting mayor for about four weeks. This happened until a special election could be held. Former mayor James LeRoy Giles won that special election and finished the rest of the term.
  • Ernest Page was appointed as an interim (temporary) mayor for about six weeks in 2005. This was while Buddy Dyer was involved in an investigation related to the 2004 election. The questions against Mayor Dyer were later dropped, and he returned to his role as mayor on April 20, 2005.
