Kids Encyclopedia Facts

In Japan, there are different types of universities. These include national, public, and private universities. As of 2019, there are 86 national universities. There are also 93 public universities and 607 private universities. National universities are often seen as very important in Japan's education system. They are highly respected for their teaching and research.

History of National Universities

In 2004, a big change happened for national universities. They became more independent. Each national university became a National University Corporation (国立大学法人, kokuritsu daigaku hōjin). This means they got more control over how they run things.

Before 2004, the teachers and staff at these universities were government employees. After the change, they were no longer directly working for the government. This gave universities more freedom.

Special National Universities

In 2017, a new group of national universities was created. These are called "Designated National University Corporations." The goal was to make these universities even better. They aim to improve education and research a lot.

The MEXT chooses these special universities. As of 2021, 10 universities have been picked. They are known for their high quality.
