University History
The university's beginnings can be traced back to Eiraku Hospital (永楽病院, Eiraku byōin) in 1899. This hospital was connected to the Tokyo Medical License Exam. The university officially began on October 12, 1928. It was first called Tokyo National School of Dentistry (東京高等歯科医学校, Tōkyō kōtō shikai gakkō). This made it the very first national dental school in Japan.
In 1944, the school became a university and was named Tokyo Medical and Dental College. It changed its name again in 1946 to Tokyo Medical and Dental University. In 1951, separate departments for medicine and dentistry were created. A research center for materials was also started. This center later grew into the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering. In 2004, the school became a National University Corporation.
