Main Political Parties in Manitoba
The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba is where elected officials, called Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), meet to make laws for the province. Here are the main political parties that currently have members elected to the Legislative Assembly:
New Democratic Party of Manitoba
The New Democratic Party of Manitoba (NDP) was founded in 1932. This party believes in social democracy. This means they think the government should play a strong role in helping people with things like healthcare and education. They also believe in making sure everyone has a fair chance in society.
The current leader of the NDP is Wab Kinew. After the 2023 election, the NDP has 34 MLAs in the Legislative Assembly. They have formed the government in Manitoba for many years, including from 1969–1977, 1981–1988, 1999–2016, and again since 2023.
Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba
The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba (PC) is one of the oldest parties, founded in 1882. This party believes in conservatism. This often means they support ideas like lower taxes, less government involvement in businesses, and focusing on individual responsibility.
The interim leader of the PC party is Wayne Ewasko. Currently, they have 22 MLAs in the Legislative Assembly. The PC party has also formed the government in Manitoba for many periods, such as 1882–1888, 1899–1915, 1958–1969, 1977–1981, 1988–1999, and 2016–2023.
Manitoba Liberal Party
The Manitoba Liberal Party was founded in 1870. This party believes in liberalism. This often means they support individual rights, social justice, and a mix of private businesses and government services.
The interim leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party is Cindy Lamoureux. They currently have 1 MLA in the Legislative Assembly. The Liberals have also been part of the government in Manitoba in the past, including from 1888–1899, 1915–1922, and 1932–1958.
