Reptiles of Arkansas

Reptiles are a group of cold-blooded animals that have scales or bony plates covering their bodies. They are known for laying eggs, though some give birth to live young. In Arkansas, you can find various reptiles, from slithering snakes to quick lizards and slow-moving turtles. Each one has unique features and habits that help it survive in the state's diverse habitats.

Lizards in Arkansas

Lizards are a common sight in Arkansas, with 12 different kinds living there. They are known for their quick movements and often blend into their surroundings.

Skinks: Arkansas's Common Lizards

Among the most frequently seen lizards in Arkansas are skinks. There are six native species of skinks in the state. Skinks are usually smooth and shiny, with small legs and long tails. They often hide under rocks or logs and are very fast, making them hard to catch! They mostly eat insects and other small creatures.

The Western Slender Glass Lizard

Another interesting lizard found in Arkansas is the Western Slender Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus attenuatus attenuatus). This lizard looks a lot like a snake because it has no legs! However, it is indeed a lizard. You can tell it's a lizard and not a snake because it has eyelids and ear openings, which snakes do not. It gets its "glass" name because its tail can break off easily if it's caught, helping it escape from predators. The tail can then grow back later.
