Rivers Flowing to the Mediterranean Sea

Most of Sudan's rivers eventually flow into the Mediterranean Sea. The biggest and most famous of these is the mighty Nile River. The Nile is one of the longest rivers in the world, and it's like a lifeline for Sudan.

The Nile River in Sudan is made up of several big branches:

    • The Mareb River (also called Gash River): This river only reaches the Atbara River when there are big floods.
    • The Tekezé River (also known as Setit): This is another important branch of the Atbara.
    • The Angereb River (or Greater Angereb River): This river also flows into the Atbara.
  • The Blue Nile: This powerful river starts in Ethiopia and meets the White Nile in Sudan's capital, Khartoum.
    • The Rahad River: This river flows into the Blue Nile.
    • The Dinder River: Another river that joins the Blue Nile.
  • The White Nile: This part of the Nile comes from the Great Lakes region of Africa.
    • The Adar River: A tributary of the White Nile.
      • The Yabus River: This river flows into the Adar.
    • The Bahr el Ghazal: This means "River of Gazelles."
      • The Jur River: A branch of the Bahr el Ghazal.
      • The Bahr al-Arab: This river is also part of the Bahr el Ghazal system.
        • The Adda River: A smaller river flowing into the Bahr al-Arab.
        • The Umbelasha River: Another river that joins the Bahr al-Arab.
        • The Lol River: This river also flows into the Bahr al-Arab.
  • The Sobat River: This river joins the White Nile.
    • The Baro River: A main branch of the Sobat.

Some rivers in Sudan flow towards the Red Sea.

  • The Barka River: This river starts in Eritrea and flows towards the Red Sea coast of Sudan.

Rivers Flowing into Basins (Not to the Sea)

Some rivers in Sudan don't flow all the way to the ocean. Instead, they flow into special areas called "endorheic basins." This means the water collects in a lake or a dry area and doesn't connect to the sea.

Libyan Desert

  • The Wadi Howar: This is an ancient riverbed in the desert. Long, long ago, it was a branch of the Nile River, sometimes called the "Yellow Nile." Now, it's mostly dry.

Lake Kundi

  • The Ibrah River: This river flows into Lake Kundi, a lake that doesn't have an outlet to the sea.
