Latvia's Main Cities
Latvia has nine special places called "cities." These are often the biggest and most important places in the country. They have been given "city rights" a long time ago, which means they were officially recognized as important urban centers.
Here are Latvia's nine cities:
- Riga is the capital and the largest city in Latvia. It got its city rights way back in 1225! In 2008, it had over 700,000 people living there. Riga is in the Vidzeme region.
- Daugavpils is another big city, located in the Latgale region. It became a city in 1582 and had about 106,000 people in 2008.
- Liepāja is on the coast in the Kurzeme region. It got city rights in 1625 and had around 85,000 people in 2008.

- Jūrmala is a popular resort city, known for its beaches. It's in the Vidzeme region and became a city more recently, in 1959. About 55,000 people lived there in 2008.
- Ventspils is another coastal city in the Kurzeme region. It has been a city since 1378 and had about 43,000 people in 2008.

Exploring Latvia's Towns
Besides the nine main cities, Latvia also has 67 towns. These towns are smaller than cities but are still important centers for the people living in their areas. They also have their own history and when they officially became towns.
Some towns are quite old, like Aizpute and Kuldīga, which both got their town rights in 1378. Others are much newer, like Aknīste (1991) or Ķegums (1993).
These towns are spread across Latvia's historical regions, including Vidzeme, Zemgale, Latgale, and Kurzeme. Each town has its own unique charm and contributes to the rich culture of Latvia. For example, Cēsis is known for its medieval castle, while Sigulda is famous for its beautiful nature and adventure parks.
