List of vulnerable molluscs facts for kids
In September 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that 879 types of molluscs were considered vulnerable. This means they face a high risk of disappearing forever in the wild. About 12% of all mollusc species that have been checked are on this list. The IUCN also listed 18 mollusc subspecies as vulnerable.
For a species to be called vulnerable, scientists must have strong proof that it's at a high risk of extinction. Species that are even more at risk are called endangered or critically endangered. All these groups are known as threatened species.
Also, 1988 mollusc species (about 27% of those checked) are listed as data deficient. This means there isn't enough information to fully check their conservation status. The IUCN believes these species might also be in danger, especially if they live in small areas or have small populations.
This list shows some of the vulnerable mollusc species and subspecies that the IUCN has checked.
