List of wind farms in New South Wales facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New South Wales (NSW) has a fantastic opportunity to use wind power, which is a clean and renewable energy source. Wind farms use giant turbines to capture the wind's energy and turn it into electricity. Even though NSW has a lot of windy places, we haven't used as much of this power as we could.

Many of the best spots for wind farms are found on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, which is a big mountain range in Australia. While coastal areas also have strong winds, it's harder to build wind farms there because of homes and national parks. Luckily, NSW has a good network of power lines, making it easier to connect new wind farms to our electricity supply.

Back in March 2015, NSW had 625 megawatts (MW) of wind power installed. By May 2019, this amount had more than doubled to 1493 MW! This shows how much wind power is growing in our state.

To understand what people thought about wind farms, the NSW government asked 2000 people and 300 businesses in rural NSW in 2010. A huge 80% of them said they strongly supported wind farms in their area. Even if a wind farm was planned closer to their homes, 60% still supported having wind turbines within two kilometres. Only about 13% of people, many of whom were over 65, said they didn't support wind power.
