Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts is a very special award in Lithuania. It's given to people who have done amazing things in culture and the arts, like painting, music, writing, or acting. This award started in 1989.

Every year, six people or groups receive this prize. Before 2006, there were nine categories, but now it's six. The winners get their awards on February 16th at the Presidential Palace, Vilnius. This date is important because it's when Lithuania celebrates its independence from 1918.

What the Prize Is For

The prize celebrates great achievements in different cultural areas. It honors artists or groups who have created important works. People who receive the award can be citizens of Lithuania or part of the Lithuanian World Community, which means Lithuanians living in other countries.

When the award first began, judges looked at works created in the last five years. Since 2008, they consider works from the past seven years.

How Winners Are Chosen

Each year, people can suggest candidates for the prize until September 15th. The winners are then announced on December 15th.

The prize itself includes a special memorial sign, a diploma, and money. A person can only receive this National Prize once in their lifetime.

Today, professional groups and societies suggest who should get the award. Before 2008, anyone from the public could make nominations. A special committee then chooses the winners.

As of May 2008, 156 people had received this important prize.
