The Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts (Lithuanian: Nacionalinė kultūros ir meno premija) is a special award in Lithuania. It celebrates amazing achievements in culture and the arts. This prize was first started in 1989.

What is the Prize?

This award honors artists or groups who have done great work recently. The people who win can be citizens of Lithuania. They can also be members of the Lithuanian World Community, which means Lithuanians living in other countries.

How Often is it Given?

Since 2006, the prize has been given out every year. There are six different categories for the awards. Before 2006, there were nine categories.

When is the Prize Awarded?

The winners receive their awards on February 16th. This day is important because it's the anniversary of Lithuania's 1918 Act of Independence of Lithuania. The awards are given at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius.

What Do Winners Get?

Each winner of the Lithuanian National Prize receives a special memorial sign. They also get a diploma and a money prize. The money prize is about 104,000 litas. An artist can only win this important prize once in their lifetime.

How Are Winners Chosen?

People are suggested for the prize by professional art groups and societies. Before 2008, anyone from the public could suggest a candidate. A special committee then chooses the winners.

When Are Winners Announced?

You can suggest someone for the prize until September 15th each year. The winners are then announced on December 15th. When the award first started, works from the past five years were considered. In 2008, this changed to seven years.

How Many People Have Won?

By May 2008, 156 people had won this award.
