Little Big Horn College is a special kind of college located in Crow Agency, Montana. It's on the Crow Indian Reservation. This college is for adults who have finished high school or have a GED. Most students (95%) are members of the Crow Tribe. Other students come from different American Indian Tribes or live nearby.

College History: How it Started

Little Big Horn College was officially started in 1980. The Crow Tribe of Indians created it as a two-year community college. Dr. Janine Pease helped start the college. She was also its first president. The college is named after the Little Bighorn River. This river gets its name from the Big Horn Mountains, where it begins. In 1994, the college became a "land-grant college." This means it received special support, like many other tribal colleges.

What You Can Study: College Programs

Little Big Horn College offers different study programs. Students can earn associate of arts or associate of science degrees. These programs help students get jobs in the Crow Indian Reservation area. They can study things like education, business, or agriculture. The college also has programs focused on Crow culture and language. There are also one-year certificate programs available.

College Campus: Buildings and Energy

The college campus has about 35,000 square feet of learning space. It is located on two acres of land near a river. The campus is working to use sustainable energy. Their goal is to have "net-zero emissions." This means they want to produce as much clean energy as they use. In 2016, they put in a large solar panel system. This system helps power the Health and Wellness Center.

New Cultural Center and Museum

In 2021, the college received a grant to build a new cultural center and museum. This project will help share the history and culture of the Crow people. The planning committee wanted the exhibits to be created by Indigenous people. This ensures the stories are told accurately. They also want to use more of the Crow language in the museum.

Student Life and Activities

Students at Little Big Horn College can join sports teams. There are men's and women's basketball teams. They compete in a college sports league. The campus also has a Health and Wellness Center. Here, students can work out, lift weights, or take classes. These classes include yoga, aerobics, and nutrition education.

How the College is Run: Governance

The college is managed by a group called the board of trustees. These trustees are chosen by people living in different areas of the reservation.

College Partnerships: Working Together

Little Big Horn College is part of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. This group helps tribal colleges work together. They aim to make tribal nations stronger. They also help American Indian and Alaska Native people get a good education. These colleges often serve communities that are far from other schools. The college also works with Yellowstone Christian College.
