College History and Name
Little Big Horn College was created in 1980 by the Crow Tribe of Indians. It started as a two-year community college. Dr. Janine Pease helped start the college and was its first president.
The college's name comes from the Little Bighorn River. This river is one of two rivers on the reservation. Both rivers get their names from the nearby Big Horn Mountains, where they begin. In 1994, the college became a land-grant college. This means it gets special support from the government to help with education and research.
What You Can Study
Little Big Horn College offers many different study programs. You can earn associate of arts or associate of science degrees. These programs are designed to help students find jobs in the Crow Indian Reservation area.
Popular Study Areas
Some of the main subjects you can study include:
- Education
- Business
- Crow studies (learning about the Crow Tribe's culture and history)
- Agriculture
- Office and technical work
- Infrastructure (like building and maintaining roads)
The college also offers shorter, one-year certificate programs. These programs help students gain specific skills quickly for certain jobs.
Campus Life and Facilities
The college campus has over 35,000 square feet of space for learning. It is located on two acres of land in a beautiful wooded river valley.
Focus on Green Energy
Little Big Horn College is working to be very eco-friendly. It aims to have zero carbon emissions, which means it wants to produce no harmful gases that affect the environment. In 2016, the college put in a large photovoltaic system on its Health and Wellness Center. This system uses solar energy to create electricity. Grants from the United States Department of Energy helped pay for this project.
New Cultural Center and Museum
In 2021, the college received a grant to build a new cultural center and museum. This new center will show exhibits about the Crow Tribe. The planning committee wants the exhibits to be created and explained by Indigenous people. This ensures the stories and history are told accurately from their perspective. Sharon Stewart-Peregoy, a Crow Studies instructor, hopes the museum will use a lot of the Crow language. This will help keep the language alive and strong within the community.
Student Activities and Sports
Students at Little Big Horn College can join different activities. The college has men's and women's basketball teams. These teams play in Region 9 of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
