Little Deer Isle is a beautiful island located in Penobscot Bay in Maine, United States. It sits just north of a larger island and town called Deer Isle. Little Deer Isle is actually part of Deer Isle, even though it's a separate landmass.

Exploring Little Deer Isle

Little Deer Isle is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long. It's connected to Deer Isle by a special road called a causeway. This causeway makes it easy to travel between the two islands.

Getting There

You can reach Little Deer Isle by using Maine State Route 15. This road crosses the famous Deer Isle Bridge, which is a big, impressive bridge that connects the mainland to Deer Isle and then on to Little Deer Isle.

Island Landmarks

The very northern tip of Little Deer Isle has a special name: Eggemoggin. At the end of Eggemoggin, there's a tiny island called Pumpkin Island. On Pumpkin Island, you'll find a charming lighthouse. Lighthouses are important buildings that help guide ships safely at sea.

Who Lives on the Island?

Little Deer Isle is a quiet place for most of the year. Only about 300 people live there all year round. However, when summer arrives, the island becomes much busier! Many more people come to Little Deer Isle for their summer vacations, enjoying the warm weather and beautiful scenery.

Amazing Wildlife

Little Deer Isle is home to lots of different animals. If you visit, you might spot some amazing wildlife! The island has many deer, which is how it got its name. You can also see clever foxes and busy squirrels. In the sky, look out for wild turkeys, ospreys (which are large birds of prey that eat fish), and even majestic bald eagles. Bald eagles are the national bird of the United States and are truly magnificent to see flying high above the island.
