The Story of Little Iodine
Little Iodine is a mischievous young girl who loves to cause trouble. She is the daughter of Henry Tremblechin and his wife, Cora. In the beginning, Iodine appeared in Hatlo's other comic, They'll Do It Every Time. Her job was to annoy her mild-mannered father, Henry.
However, Iodine became so popular that she got her very own comic strip in 1943! Her funny antics made her a famous female character, much like Hank Ketcham's Dennis the Menace who came later.
Who Created Little Iodine?
The creator of Little Iodine was Jimmy Hatlo. He wrote and drew the comic strip from its start in 1943 until 1966. Hatlo once said that he wanted Iodine to be like all the naughty kids he knew, but still likable.
After Hatlo, other artists and writers took over the comic. Al Scaduto helped with the strip from 1966 to 1967. Then, Hy Eisman and Bob Dunn continued the comic from 1967 until it ended in 1983.
Little Iodine also appeared in comic books! There were 56 different Little Iodine comic books published by Dell Comics between 1949 and 1962.
Little Iodine on the Big Screen
In 1946, a movie called Little Iodine was made. It was a 56-minute film starring Hobart Cavanaugh as Henry, Irene Ryan as Cora, and Jo Ann Marlowe as Little Iodine. The movie was directed by Reginald Le Borg.
The movie's release was delayed because of a health issue that kept children from going to theaters. Sadly, this film is now considered a lost film, meaning copies of it are very hard to find or might not exist anymore.
Cameo Appearances
Even after her own comic strip ended, Little Iodine has made a few special guest appearances! She popped up in the Popeye Sunday comic strip on October 30, 2022, July 23, 2023, August 13, 2023, and January 28, 2024. It's fun to see classic characters return!
