What You Can See: The Museum's Collection
The Little Museum of Dublin tells the story of Dublin in the 1900s. It shows visitors what life was like in the city back then. The museum was the idea of its director, Trevor White, and curator, Simon O'Connor. It started in April 2011 and opened to the public in October of that same year.
The museum has more than 5,000 items. These items were given or loaned by people who live in Dublin. The museum has three floors of exhibits. You can learn about many important events in Irish history. These include the 1916 Rising and U.S. President John F. Kennedy's visit to Dublin. In 2014, the museum even opened an exhibit about the famous rock band U2.
Programs for Visitors and Students
The museum also runs fun programs. They have "I Love Dublin" classes for school children aged 6 to 17. There's also a program called "City of a Thousand Welcomes." This program connects visitors to Dublin with local people. These locals, called 'ambassadors,' meet visitors for tea or a drink. They tell them interesting facts about the city.
In 2014, the museum bought a collection of work by artist and poet Christy Brown. This collection includes private letters, drawings, paintings, and poems. The Little Museum and the National Library of Ireland now share these special items.
The Little Museum gets support from groups like Dublin City Council and The Ireland Funds.
Awards and Recognition
The Little Museum of Dublin has received many awards. In 2012, it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award.

This was the third year in a row it won this award. In February 2014, the museum also won a "David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Award" for arts. City of a Thousand Welcomes Program
In June 2011, the Little Museum started a program called "City of a Thousand Welcomes." This program wanted to show how friendly Dubliners are to visitors. It connected people visiting Dublin for the first time with welcoming locals. Over 1,000 local 'ambassadors' joined the program. These ambassadors included historians, teachers, and other city residents. They would tell visitors about cool places in Dublin. This program was not active as of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
