The Little Theatre, often called The Little, is a special movie theater in downtown Rochester, New York. It's a non-profit place that shows unique movies, like independent films and movies from other countries. It's known as a "multiplex" because it has several screens.

The Little Theatre opened in 1929. This makes it one of the oldest theaters in the United States that focuses on showing artistic and independent films. Since 2011, The Little has been part of the WXXI Public Broadcasting Council. This is a non-profit group that runs public radio and TV stations in the area.

What Happens at The Little?

The Little Theatre is a busy place! It has hosted performances during the Rochester International Jazz Festival, which happens every June. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the theater temporarily closed its building. It then started showing independent films online through its website.

Celebrating Women in Film

Since 2021, The Little Theatre has been the home of the High Falls Film Festival. This festival is a monthly series that celebrates women who work in movies. It's a great way to see films made by talented female directors, writers, and actors.

Award-Winning Restoration Work

In 2022, The Little Theatre received a special award. It got the Excellence in Historic Preservation award from the Preservation League of New York State. This award was for the amazing work done to restore the inside of the theater. The goal was to make it look as much like it did in 1929 as possible. They also made sure to improve how easy it is for everyone to access the building.
