How Preserve NYS Helps Save History
A study in 2006 looked at the projects that received money from Preserve NYS between 2000 and 2004. This study found that the money from the Preservation League directly helped fix up old buildings. It also helped these projects get even more money and support from other groups. The League's work also helps get old places officially recognized as important landmarks at local, state, and national levels.
Finding Important Places
About half of the projects that received grants during that time were "cultural resource surveys." This means they were studies to find and record important historical and cultural places. These surveys helped identify 8,472 important places. They also led to 1,294 new places being added to the New York State or National Register of Historic Places. These registers are official lists of places that are very important to history.
Awards for Great Work
The Preservation League also gives out "Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards." These awards celebrate projects that do an outstanding job of saving history. You can find a list of these award-winning projects here. One example of a project that won an award is the Free Library in Altamont, New York.
