Liu Pi (born 216 BC, died 154 BC) was an important figure in ancient China. He was the nephew of Emperor Gao of Han, who was the first emperor of the Han dynasty. Liu Pi became the Prince of Wu, a powerful region. Later, during the rule of Emperor Jing of Han, Liu Pi led a big rebellion. This event was called the Rebellion of the Seven States. He fought against the emperor's plans to make the central government stronger. Liu Pi was defeated and died during this rebellion.
Early Life and Rise to Power
In 196 BC, when Liu Pi was 20 years old, he was given the title of Marquess of Pei. He showed great skill as a cavalry general. He fought bravely in a war against a rebel named Ying Bu. Because of his abilities and the emperor's worries about the Wu region, Emperor Gao made Liu Pi the Prince of Wu. This happened on November 30, 196 BC.
Conflict with the Emperor
Later, during the time of Emperor Wen of Han, a sad event happened. Liu Pi's son, Liu Xian, was playing a game called Liubo with Crown Prince Qi. Crown Prince Qi later became Emperor Jing of Han. During the game, they argued, and the Crown Prince accidentally killed Liu Xian with the game board.
Liu Pi was very angry and sad about his son's death. He also started to distrust the Emperor. Because of this, Liu Pi began to gather a lot of wealth and build up his army in his own territory. Emperor Wen thought his own son was mostly to blame for Liu Xian's death. So, he did not punish Liu Pi for increasing his power.
The Rebellion of the Seven States
After Crown Prince Qi became Emperor Jing of Han, he wanted to make the central government stronger. He listened to advice from a wise official named Chao Cuo. Emperor Jing decided to reduce the power of the regional princes, including Liu Pi.
In 154 BC, Liu Pi convinced six other princes to join him. Together, they started a large rebellion against the emperor. This rebellion is known as the Rebellion of the Seven States. Emperor Jing appointed a general named Zhou Yafu to lead the imperial army. General Zhou Yafu's army defeated Liu Pi's forces. Liu Pi was killed during the battle. After his death, his title as Prince of Wu was taken away.
