Liz Walker is an American pastor and a journalist who used to report the news. She made history as the first Black woman to be a main news anchor in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Later, in 2014, she became the Pastor of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church.

Liz Walker's Education

Liz Walker finished high school at Little Rock Central High School in 1969. She often said that her education there helped her achieve many great things. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Olivet College in Michigan.

In 2005, she went on to get a master's degree from Harvard Divinity School. Her studies there focused on religion and issues important to women. She is also a member of several important groups for journalists, like the National Association of Black Journalists.

Career as a Journalist

Liz Walker started working as an evening news anchor at WBZ-TV in Boston in 1981. Before that, her journalism career began in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. She worked at a station called KATV, where she managed public affairs.

She then took on reporting jobs in Denver (KMGH-TV) and San Francisco (KRON-TV). In 1980, she moved to Boston and joined WBZ. She was a very successful journalist.

After reporting a story about the Lost Boys of Sudan, Liz Walker started to think differently about her life. This experience led her to enroll at the Harvard Divinity School in September 2001. In January 2002, she created her own documentary film about Sudan called In the Lion's Mouth.

Becoming a Pastor

Liz Walker became the Pastor of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church in May 2014. She had already been serving as a "transitional leader" for the church since 2011. On December 25, 2021, a newspaper called The Boston Globe reported that Liz Walker had left her role as minister at the Roxbury Presbyterian Church.

Awards and Honors

Liz Walker has received many awards for her work. She has been added to the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame, which is a special honor for people in broadcasting. She has also won two Emmy Awards, which are major awards for television.

In 2001, the Crittenton Women's Union gave her the Amelia Earhart Award. Her reporting on Sudan also earned her an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2002. This award is given for excellent news stories by the Regional Television Radio News Director's Association.

Personal Life

Liz Walker has a son named Nik Walker, who is an actor. She grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and her father was also a minister.
