Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre (which is Canolfan Celfyddydau Llantarnam Grange in Welsh) is a cool place for art in Cwmbrân, Wales. It's inside a beautiful old house from the 1800s. This centre is super important for showing off amazing art, especially "applied arts" like pottery, jewelry, and textiles, in south-east Wales.

The centre also runs lots of fun art classes and projects for people in the local area. It's a charity, which means it's run by volunteers. It gets money from the Arts Council of Wales and local councils to help keep it going.

History of Llantarnam Grange

Llantarnam Grange stands where a much older building once was. This old place was owned by Llantarnam Abbey. After 1871, the building became a farmhouse.

In 1952, the last person living there passed away. The Cwmbrân Development Corporation bought the building. For a while, it was used as a postal sorting office.

In April 1966, the building got a new life! It opened as the Llantarnam Grange Societies Club. People used it for club meetings, theatre shows, and art displays. Later, in 1983, it officially became the Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre. The centre celebrated its 50th birthday in 2016.

What Can You See at the Galleries?

The arts centre has two main areas for showing art: the main gallery and gallery 2. They put on six new exhibitions every year. These shows feature all sorts of art, like sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles. You can also see paintings, photographs, and printmaking.

Sometimes, they even display art made by people from the local community. Llantarnam Grange usually hosts about 24 different art shows each year. Between 2011 and 2014, more and more people visited the centre. Visitor numbers went up by one third!

The Family Group Sculpture

Right outside the arts centre, you can see a sculpture called Family Group. It was made by an artist named David Horn in 1965. This sculpture is made of fibreglass. It shows a family facing the challenges of growing up in a new community.

The Cwmbrân Arts Trust gave this sculpture to the people of Cwmbrân. A Member of Parliament, Leo Abse, officially showed it to the public on September 23, 1965. In 2001, the sculpture was moved to its current spot outside the arts centre.

The sculpture used to be in a different place, on a cobblestone base near General Rees Square. Sadly, the sculpture has been damaged by vandalism and graffiti over time.
