Loch Achaidh na h-Inich is located in a lovely part of Scotland. It's about 3 kilometers (2 miles) south-south-east of a village called Plockton. It's also quite close to Duirinish and Balmacara. Just half a kilometer away, you'll find another loch called Loch Lundie.

A Place of Ancient History

This loch holds many secrets from the past. The land at its northern end is known as 'Ach an Dà Thearnaidh'. This name means 'the Field of the Two Descents'. Long ago, this field was a special meeting place. It was where the fighting men of Clan Matheson would gather.

The Fiery Cross

Clan Matheson is an old Scottish clan. When the clan needed its warriors, a special signal was sent. This signal was called the 'fiery cross'. A clansman would run through the lands carrying a burning cross. This told everyone it was time to assemble at Ach an Dà Thearnaidh.

Fort Matheson and the Crannog

The Matheson clan also had a strong fort nearby. This fort was built on the high ground just north-west of the loch. Today, you can still see the remains of Fort Matheson. These old ruins are even marked on maps.

The Island Castle

In the northern part of the loch, there is a small Crannog. A crannog is an ancient artificial island. People built these islands in lochs for safety. The crannog in Loch Achaidh na h-Inich was once home to the castle of the Matheson clan chief. Imagine living on an island in the middle of a loch!
