Loch Macaterick is a beautiful loch (which is the Scottish word for a lake) located in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It's found within the amazing Galloway Forest Park and is part of a special area called the Merrick Kells SSSI. This means it's a place with important plants, animals, or geology that needs protecting.
Where is Loch Macaterick Located?
Loch Macaterick is nestled among some hills. It lies to the north of a hill called Macaterick, which is about 499 meters (1,637 feet) tall. To its west, you'll find Craigfionn, a hill that stands at 366 meters (1,201 feet). Another loch, Loch Riecawr, is located to the southeast of Loch Macaterick.
The loch sits at an elevation of about 285 meters (935 feet) above sea level. Water flows into Loch Macaterick from a stream called Tunskeen Lane. The water then flows out through the Black Garpel, which later becomes Eglin Lane.
What Can You Find at Loch Macaterick?
Loch Macaterick is home to a few small islands. These include Eagles Isle, Blaeberry Isle, and Deer Isle. Imagine exploring these tiny islands in the middle of the loch!
In the past, there was a wooden walkway, called a boardwalk, that led through a forested area right to the loch. This made it easier for people to visit. However, this boardwalk was removed when forestry work was done in the area.
The area around the loch has also seen some impact from tiny creatures called heather beetles. These small insects can sometimes cause damage to heather plants. Luckily, the impact on Loch Macaterick has been limited.
