Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lodovico Grossi da Viadana (born around 1560 – died May 2, 1627) was an important Italian composer and teacher. He was also a Franciscan friar. He is famous for being one of the first to use a new music technique called figured bass. This technique helped change music from the Renaissance style to the Baroque style.

Life of Lodovico Viadana

Lodovico Viadana was born in Viadana, a town in Italy. It is in the province of Mantua. His real family name was Grossi.

He joined a religious group called the Minor Observants before 1588. When he joined, he took the name of his hometown, Viadana.

Some people believe he studied music with Costanzo Porta. By 1594, he became the choirmaster at the cathedral in Mantua.

In 1597, he moved to Rome. Later, in 1602, he became choirmaster at the San Luca cathedral in Mantua.

Viadana worked in many cathedrals across Italy. These included places like Concordia and Fano. In Fano, he was the maestro di cappella (music director) from 1610 to 1612.

From 1614 to 1617, he held an important role in his religious order. This role covered a large area, including Ferrara, Mantua, and Piacenza.

By 1623, he had moved to Busseto. He later worked at a convent in Gualtieri, near Parma. He passed away in Gualtieri.

Viadana's Music and Importance

Viadana played a key role in developing early Baroque music. He was important for a technique called basso continuo. This included a way of writing music notes called figured bass.

He didn't invent figured bass. Other musicians had used it before him, as early as 1597. But Viadana was the first to use it in a big collection of church music.

This collection was called Cento concerti con il basso continuo. He published it in Venice in 1602. This made the new technique very well known.

In 1607, Agostino Agazzari wrote a guide on how to play figured bass. However, many musicians in Italy's main music cities had already learned this new method.
