What Was Logan's Raid?
Logan's Raid was part of a bigger conflict called the Northwest Indian War. This war involved American settlers and Native American tribes. The American soldiers wanted to stop attacks on their settlements. Many Shawnee warriors were away defending other villages. This meant the villages Logan attacked were mostly home to families and older people.
Who Was Involved in the Raid?
General Benjamin Logan led about 790 soldiers from the Kentucky militia. The militia was a group of citizen soldiers. They were fighting against the Shawnee people. The Shawnee villages were led by chiefs, including Chief Moluntha.
What Happened During the Raid?
General Logan's soldiers attacked the Shawnee villages. They burned down thirteen villages. They also destroyed the food supplies. Many people were killed or captured during the attack.
The Death of Chief Moluntha
One important event during the raid was the death of Chief Moluntha. He was an elderly Shawnee chief. Earlier that year, Moluntha had signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Fort Finney. He even flew an American flag over his home to show he wanted peace.
When Logan's soldiers attacked, Moluntha calmly gave himself up. He showed them a copy of the treaty. He wanted to prove his peaceful relationship with the United States. However, a soldier named Colonel Hugh McGary was part of Logan's group. McGary had been in a battle four years earlier where many American soldiers died. He asked Moluntha if he had been at that battle. Moluntha had not been there. But he might have misunderstood the question and seemed to say yes. Colonel McGary then killed the old chief.
What Happened Next?
The death of Chief Moluntha and the destruction of their villages made the Shawnee people very angry. They felt betrayed because Moluntha had tried to make peace. This anger led to more attacks by the Shawnee on American settlers. Logan's Raid, instead of ending the fighting, actually made the war worse.
