The Mall's Story
How Logan Valley Mall Started
The Logan Valley Mall first opened its doors in November 1965. Back then, it was an open-air shopping area. It had stores like Sears and Weis Markets, along with a few smaller shops.
In 1966, a JCPenney store was built at the mall. After that, the entire shopping center was enclosed. This made it an indoor mall, and it had a grand opening on June 8, 1967. Later, in 1979, the mall grew even bigger. A new department store called Hess's was added during this expansion.
Rebuilding After a Fire
On December 16, 1994, a fire broke out at the mall. It caused a lot of damage, destroying almost half of the building. But the mall quickly made a plan to rebuild and improve.
The rebuilding happened in three main steps:
- Phase One (1995): A new store called Kaufmann's was built. It replaced the old Hess's store. The parts of the mall that were not damaged were also updated. Some stores, like Wall To Wall Sound & Video, changed their names. A new two-story section was built where the fire damage had been.
- Phase Two: A new three-story parking garage was added. This made it easier for people to park. Also, a new movie theater with eight screens opened up.
- Phase Three (1997): A new, larger JCPenney store opened. It was closer to the Sears store. After this, a new food court was created. It was located on the second floor of the old JCPenney store. This change also made space for more shops in the mall.
Changes in Ownership and Stores
In 2003, a company called Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) took over the mall. This happened when they joined with Crown American.
A few years later, in 2005, the company that owned Kaufmann's was sold. Because of this, the Kaufmann's store at Logan Valley Mall became a Macy's.
In 2017, the movie theater changed its name. It became AMC Classic after AMC bought the Carmike movie chain. Also in 2017, the mall got new owners: Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group.
On December 28, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store at the mall would close. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Sears store at Logan Valley Mall closed its doors on March 3, 2019.
