Lohn is a small, unincorporated community in McCulloch County, Texas, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In 2000, about 149 people lived in Lohn.

Where is Lohn?

Lohn is located in the northern part of McCulloch County, Texas. You can find it about two miles west of U.S. Highway 183. It's also close to where two Farm Roads, FM 504 and FM 2635, meet.

A Look at Lohn's History

Early Settlers

The story of Lohn began in 1879 when William F. Lohn and his family moved to the area. A few years later, in 1881, several other families from Germany joined them. These early settlers helped the community grow.

Growing the Community

In 1891, Morgan Stacy opened a store in Lohn. He also started running the local post office, which was a big step for the community. By 1893, Lohn had a church and even a flour mill, which helped people grind grain. A simple one-room schoolhouse was also built that year for the children.

Schools Come Together

As Lohn grew, so did its schools. In 1896, the Lohn Central School was finished. This new school brought together students from smaller schools in nearby places like Cow Creek and Salt Gap. This made Lohn a central place for education in the area.

Population Changes Over Time

Lohn stayed a small community for many years. In 1914, about 70 people lived there. But by 1931, the population grew a lot, reaching 360 people! After that, the number of residents slowly went down. It was about 250 in the 1940s and 100 by the mid-1960s. In recent years, the population has stayed around 150 people.

Education in Lohn

Public education for the children of Lohn is provided by the Lohn Independent School District. This school district has just one campus, which is called Lohn School. It serves students from pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The school welcomes students from Lohn and the nearby countryside in northern McCulloch County.

Lohn's Climate

The weather in Lohn is usually hot and humid during the summer months. Winters are generally mild, meaning they are not too cold. This type of weather is known as a humid subtropical climate.
