María Dolores "Lola" Gallardo Núñez, born on June 10, 1993, is a Spanish professional footballer. She plays as a goalkeeper, which means she protects the goal. Lola plays for Atlético Madrid, a top club in Spain's Primera División. She also represents the Spain women's national team.
Club Football Journey
Lola Gallardo began her football journey at Sevilla FC. She then moved to Sporting Huelva. In 2012, she joined Atlético Madrid. On July 1, 2020, Lola signed a two-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, a famous French club. After playing for Lyon, she returned to Atlético Madrid in 2021.
Playing for Spain
Early International Success
Lola Gallardo has achieved great things playing for her country. In 2010, she was named the best player in the UEFA U-17 Women's Championship. She was also recognized as the best goalkeeper in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup that same year.
Joining the Senior Team
In June 2013, Spain's national team coach, Ignacio Quereda, chose Lola for the senior squad. This was for the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 tournament in Sweden. She was a backup goalkeeper for the team. Lola earned her first senior international "cap" (which means playing in an official match for her country) in a friendly game against Denmark.
World Cup Appearances
Lola was part of Spain's team for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. She was also called up for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. These are major tournaments where the best teams from around the world compete.
UEFA Women's Euro 2022
Gallardo was also part of the Spain squad for the UEFA Women's Euro 2022.
Player Discussions and the World Cup Win
In September 2022, Lola was one of a group of players known as "Las 15." These players decided not to play for the national team for a while. They were unhappy with the head coach, Jorge Vilda. Eleven months later, Spain won the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Lola was not part of the team that won the World Cup.
