Longfellow Mountains facts for kids
The Longfellow Mountains are a group of mountains found in the northwestern part of Maine, a state in the United States. They are a smaller part, or subrange, of the much larger Appalachian Mountains system. These mountains stretch across Maine, starting from northern New Hampshire and going northeast into the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec.
Why are they called Longfellow Mountains?
In 1959, the lawmakers in Maine, known as the Maine Legislature, decided to give a special name to the many mountains and mountain ranges in northwest Maine. They chose the name Longfellow Mountains to honor a famous poet named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882). He was born in Maine and is well-known for his poems.
Most of Maine's mountains, including the Longfellow Mountains, are part of the vast Appalachian Mountains system. This system runs along the eastern side of North America.
