Longhorn, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Longhorn was once a small community in Bexar County, Texas. It was special because it was completely owned by a company called Longhorn Cement Company. This company built the village for its workers and their families, as it was quite far from the big city of San Antonio.

What Was Longhorn?

Longhorn was a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it was an area that the government counted for population. However, it wasn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Think of it like a neighborhood that wasn't part of a bigger city yet.

A Company Town

Longhorn was a true "company town." The Longhorn Cement Company owned all the land and buildings there. They created this village specifically for their employees. It was built far north of San Antonio, making it easier for workers to live close to their jobs.

Life in Longhorn

Life in Longhorn was simple. The village had important places for its residents. There was a local store where people could buy supplies. It also had its own post office, which made sending and receiving mail easy. For fun, the community even had a baseball field where people could play and watch games.

Why Did Longhorn Disappear?

Over time, the big city of San Antonio began to grow. It expanded northward, slowly surrounding what was once the company's private property. Eventually, the Longhorn Cement Company closed down. When the company shut its doors, the village was no longer needed. The homes were emptied, and the area was abandoned.

Longhorn Today

Today, Longhorn no longer appears on maps as a separate place. It has been fully absorbed into the City of San Antonio. What was once a distinct company town is now just another part of the growing city.
