Lonquén River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lonquén River is a river located in the Ñuble Region of Central Chile. It flows through the southern part of this region. The river is an important natural feature of the area.

Where the River Begins

The Lonquén River starts when two smaller streams meet. These streams are called the Pichimávida and Colomávida. They both begin in the mountains to the east of the province.

The River's Journey

At first, the Lonquén River flows from north to south. Along this part of its journey, several smaller streams join it. From the west, it receives water from streams like La Huerta, Coipuencillo, El Salto, Coroney, and Ninhue. From the east, the Torrecilla stream and other smaller ones, like the Tiuque, add to its flow.

After this section, the Lonquén River changes direction. It then flows from east to west. In this part, more streams join the river. From the north, it gets water from Ranquil, Cholchol, Reloca, San Jose, and Santa Rosa streams. From the south, streams like Corontas, Buenos Aires, Luengos, Cabrería, Molino, and Antequereo flow into it.

Finally, the Lonquén River empties into the Itata River. It joins the Itata River from its northern bank. This happens as the Itata River itself is turning towards the west.

Fort Lonquén

An old fort called Fort Lonquén was built near the river. This fort was constructed in the year 1602. It was built by Governor Alonso de Ribera. The fort was located on the south bank of the Lonquén River. It was about 9 kilometers (about 5.6 miles) upstream from where the Lonquén River meets the Itata River.
