About the Loomis-Pomeroy House
The Loomis-Pomeroy House is in a part of town once called North Coventry. You can find it on the south side of US 44. This road was once part of the famous Boston Post Road. Right across the street is the Second Congregational Church.
The house is mostly made of brick. The main part of the house has two and a half stories. It has three sections across the front. There's also an attached section, or "ell," made of brick and wood.
The Property and Its Buildings
Long ago, this house was part of a huge farm. The farm was about 100 acres (40 hectares) big. Over time, the land became smaller. Today, the property is about 3.8 acres (1.5 hectares). This area includes the main house. It also has a barn, an ice house, and a small outdoor toilet called a privy.
History of the House and Families
The main part of the Loomis-Pomeroy House was probably built around 1833. The attached ell might be even older. Records from 1823 mention a building on this land. This older building might have been the ell. People think it was used as extra rooms for a nearby tavern. This tavern was run by the Pomeroy family.
The Pomeroy Family's Influence
The Pomeroy family started their tavern in 1801. It was right next to the church, which was built in 1745. Eleazer Pomeroy was an important person in the family. Besides running the tavern, he also operated stagecoaches. Stagecoaches were like old-time buses that carried people and mail. By 1828, Eleazer Pomeroy owned a lot of land in the area.
Many people believe Eleazer Pomeroy built this house. In 1843, he sold it to his son, George Pomeroy.
Later Owners: The Freeman and Loomis Families
In 1881, James Otis Freeman bought the property. His family owned the house for many years. His daughter married a man named Loomis. Because of this, the house became known as the Loomis-Pomeroy House. The Loomis family kept the house until the 1980s.
