Loop, Indiana County, Pennsylvania facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Loop was a small place in Pennsylvania, in a part of the state called Indiana County. It was known as an unincorporated community, which means it didn't have its own local government like a town or city does.

Loop got its name because it was located near a big, loop-shaped bend in the Mahoning Creek. This kind of bend in a river is called a meander.

Early Days of Loop

The first person to settle in the Loop area was Lysander Barrett, who arrived around 1842. Just a few years later, in 1847, an important building was put up: an iron furnace. This furnace was used to make iron, which was a big industry back then.

Life in the Community

Even though Loop was a small place, it had some important services for the people who lived there.

Community Services

  • Post Office: Loop had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail. It was open for many years, from 1885 until 1959.
  • Schoolhouse: There was also a schoolhouse where children in the community could go to learn.
  • Railway Stop: Loop was a stop on the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway. This train line was important for travel and for moving goods in and out of the area.

Over time, the community of Loop became less active and was eventually abandoned.
